Define Operating System (OS)

Operating System is software between applications and hardware which gives resources to application programs/software for various tasks and controls the execution of all others programs.  It is the most important program for a computer. Actually, Operating System provides a software platform for other application programs.

 

The most popular desktop Operating Systems are Windows, Mac and Linux. There are other some operating systems for desktop like as Unix, Ubuntu, MS-DOS, IRIX, BeOS etc. The popular mobile Operating Systems are Apple iOS, Google Android, Blackberry OS, Nokia’s Symbian, HP webOS, Windows Phone OS etc.

 

Operating Systems can be multi-users, multiprocessing, multitasking, multi threading, real time etc. The real time Operating Systems are DOS and UNIX.
