Analog to Digital Conversion – needs for A/D conversion

A/D conversion is a sampling from the perspective of Pattern Recognition which goal is to gather sensed data from samples and change it to digital representation that is amenable to further processing.

Need for A/D conversion

  1. From A/D conversion we get a continuous range of values and can store a finite amount of values in a finite number of bits (discrete values).
  2. To find a discrete representation such that the original analog signal can be accurately reconstructed.
  3. Sometimes in order to get better speeds we accept some minimal information loss (accuracy).
  4. To face the trade-offs of voice recording where you skip letters, digital images with aliasing effects and movies with blocky look.
